Recovery Footage

Documentary footage being captured now lives here

From Restored to Balanced

The story starts at the return from Africa

Everything since then is the bridge. This page is the record: the restoration that came first, the work that followed, and the results that are documented rather than claimed.

The Arc

How restoration became a framework

Six chapters, in order. The order is the point: nothing after the first two would have held without them.

  1. 01

    The Return

    Restoration

    Coming back from Africa

The story starts here, not at the first speaking engagement. Alonzo returned from Africa to a life that needed rebuilding, and the rebuilding is what everything since has been built on.

  2. 02

    Restore Fellowship

    Restoration

    The work of being restored

A season inside the Restore Fellowship, learning that restoration is not a moment of decision but a practice repeated until it holds. The framework taught today came directly out of this period.

  3. 03

    Return to Community

    Community

    Back into the neighborhoods

Alonzo brought the work back to the communities he came from, starting with youth programming and men's groups in Chicago, and finding that what had worked on him worked on others.

  4. 04

    Chicago Public Schools

    Education

    Thirty campuses and counting

CBT-certified resilience curricula delivered across more than thirty Chicago turnaround schools, refined in the buildings with the hardest conditions and the least margin for anything that does not work.

  5. 05

    Springfield

    Policy

    Executive orders and legislative testimony

The work reached the level of policy, with executive orders facilitated in Springfield and presentations delivered to lawmakers on youth mental health and school climate.

  6. 06

    Now

    Launch

    Living Life Balanced

The philosophy has a name, the services are built, and the audiences are asking where to book. This platform is the stage the work has always deserved.

Chronicle of Success

The record, documented

Past work does not expire. These are the engagements and outcomes that predate this launch, published as the credibility anchors they are.

Policy2024

Executive orders facilitated in Springfield

Worked with state offices to move youth mental health provisions from proposal into signed executive action.

The engagement involved briefing staff, presenting field data from school programming, and helping shape language that survived committee. It is the clearest evidence that this work translates beyond a single building.

Education2023

Resilience curriculum scaled across 30+ CPS schools

CBT-certified programming delivered city-wide, concentrated in turnaround schools.

The curriculum ran with both students and staff. Participating schools reported measurable movement on attendance and climate indicators over the course of the engagement.

Education2023

School-wide attendance improvement

Partner campuses recorded gains in daily attendance following a full-semester engagement.

Attendance was the metric administrators cared about most, and it moved. The programming addressed the reasons students were not coming rather than the fact that they were not.

12%average attendance gain
Speaking2022

MLK Day keynote

Delivered the Martin Luther King Jr. Day keynote to a capacity audience at a major Chicago institution.

The talk connected King's writing on restoration to the present conditions in Chicago neighborhoods, and led directly to a run of church and civic bookings.

Education2022

Men's programming launched

Dedicated workshop series addressing direction, depression, and standard-setting for Black men.

Built because nothing else in the space was speaking to these men directly. The series consistently filled and became the basis for the Setting the Standard course.

Policy2021

Legislative presentation on youth mental health

Presented field findings to Illinois lawmakers on the mental health conditions inside turnaround schools.

The presentation brought classroom-level evidence into a policy conversation that had been running mostly on aggregate data.

Media2021

Local media coverage of school programming

Chicago outlets covered the resilience programming and its results in partner schools.

Coverage focused on the practical structure of the curriculum and the response from students who had disengaged from other interventions.

These entries are populated from Alonzo's documented history. Archival photos, press clippings, and scanned documents get attached to each one during content handoff.

Living in Balance

The tensions the work holds together

Balance is not a midpoint; it is opposing forces kept in relationship. These are the pairs the framework works to hold, rather than resolve.

The Philosophy

What the work rests on

Restoration comes before balance

You cannot balance something that has not been put back together. The order matters, and skipping the first part is why most attempts at the second one fail.

Resilience is taught, not issued

Treating resilience as a personality trait lets institutions off the hook and leaves individuals believing they were born without it. It is a skill set, and it can be taught to anyone.

Say the thing plainly

Mental health conversations fail when the language gets careful. The work here names depression, direction, and failure directly, because people can only address what has been named.

Live it publicly

The daily documentation is not content for its own sake. It is showing what living balanced actually looks like, so that someone can find themselves in it.
